Introduced in 2001, the Dot NAME top-level domain name extension is the single TLD supposed to be for personal sites only. These domains can be personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other designations people are famous by. At the beginning, only third-level registrations were permitted, so if you desired to secure john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already purchased 3rd-level domains remained online.
